Paestrum — The grecian civilization in Cilento

Paestum was founded around the end of the 7th century bc by colonists from the Greek city of Sybaris, and originally known as Poseidonia. During the invasion of Italy by Hannibal, Paestrum remained faithful to Rome and afterwards was granted special favours, continuing to prosper during the Roman imperial period. The city is surrounded by defensive walls that still stand.

The main features of the site of Paestrum today are the standing remains of three glorious temples in Doric style, dating from the 6th century BC. These were dedicated to Hera, Apollo and Athena, although they have traditionally been identified as a basilica and temples of Neptune and Ceres, owing to 18th-century misattribution. An interactive virtual reconstruction of the temples can be found at this link.
